Considering New Zealand as Your Next Move? What the Newest Employment Figures Reveal
News · 2026-08-28 · 4 min read
For experienced professionals exploring New Zealand jobs from Dubai or anywhere else in the Gulf, fresh employment data offers more than a headline. Read carefully, it shows which industries, regions and age groups are growing, and where conditions are softer.
According to the latest employment indicators from Stats NZ, filled jobs rose by roughly 18,000 in the year to July, bringing the nationwide total to 2.34 million. Seasonally adjusted, a further 7,746 roles were added from June to July, a lift of 0.3%. The overall total is encouraging, but the detail beneath it is what should guide a relocation decision.
Industry Winners and the One Area Losing Ground
Healthcare stands out above everything else. Healthcare and social assistance grew by 6,581 jobs over the year, an increase of 2.3%, making it the largest single contributor to new employment nationally. If your background is in nursing, aged care, allied health or support work, this is about as positive a signal as the figures can give.
Several other areas also expanded:
| Industry | Annual change |
|---|---|
| Public administration and safety | Up 6,418 jobs (4%) |
| Education and training | Up 2,630 roles (1.2%) |
| Construction | Up 1,810 jobs (0.9%) |
| Professional, scientific and technical services | Down 2,078 jobs (1.1%) |
The construction result is worth noting for tradespeople, because that industry moves closely with spending on housing and infrastructure. The fall in professional, scientific and technical services, which covers a large share of NZ's office-based and technology-related workforce, is the clear exception. If your move depends on a consulting, IT or scientific-services position, build that weakness into your plans, even while healthcare and public-sector hiring head the other way.
A Regional Picture With Clear Contrasts
Where you settle matters as much as what you do. Canterbury came out on top, gaining 6,824 jobs over the year (2.2%), which suggests the Christchurch economy, through the rebuild and since, still has plenty of momentum. Solid gains were also recorded in Auckland (+4,427) and Waikato (+3,330), while Otago grew by 1,710.
Northland moved in the other direction, losing 1,526 jobs. That 2.1% decline was the sharpest fall among the regions Stats NZ singled out. For anyone comparing locations, the message is useful: right now the South Island and the central North Island are performing better than the north.
How Hiring Splits by Gender and Age
The demographic figures add further insight for skilled migrants and their families:
- Women took most of the year's job growth, with 7,959 more roles (0.7%), against 3,819 (0.3%) for men.
- Workers aged 65 and over saw employment climb 4.1%, or 5,407 jobs. That is relevant if you are relocating later in your career or expect to keep working beyond the usual retirement age.
- People aged 35-to-39 recorded the biggest increase in raw terms, up 9,030 jobs (3.2%).
- Those aged 30-to-34 went backwards, down 5,180 jobs (1.8%).
Earnings Are Climbing Alongside Jobs
Growth is not limited to headcount. Total gross earnings nationwide reached $16.5 billion in July, an increase of $607 million (3.8%) over the year. Employers are paying more as well as hiring more, which is relevant when you are budgeting a move around expected take-home pay.
Reading the Data as a Gulf-Based Professional
Taken as a whole, the market has a distinct shape. Healthcare, public administration, education and construction are moving ahead. Canterbury and Waikato are outperforming most of the country. Older workers and women are enjoying stronger-than-average gains. On the other side, professional and technical services, Northland and people in their early thirties face tougher conditions.
Keep in mind that Stats NZ treats these figures as provisional for three months while payday filing data is finalised, so they are a strong early indication rather than a final result. Even so, whether you are currently working in Abu Dhabi, Doha or Riyadh, they give you a sound basis for choosing the industry and the region most likely to help you secure work quickly as your next move.
