Sous Chef

Hospitality · Clarence Park, Adelaide SA, Australia · Full-Time · $70,000 - $80,000/yr

Cooking in Dubai, Doha or Riyadh and keen to win back your evenings? This Adelaide kitchen runs on a steadier rhythm: 38 hours across five days, mostly morning and lunch trade, with the majority of shifts wrapping up at about 3:30pm.

A lively, fresh-food venue in Clarence Park, South Australia, wants a capable Chef de Partie or an up-and-coming Sous Chef ready to step up. The menu blends deli, café and sandwich-style cooking, so there is plenty of variety and scope for your own ideas.

You will partner with the Head Chef, yet also run the pass yourself and call the shots during service. It suits someone who likes ownership, works well alone and wants to push the kitchen forward as a considered career step.

Key Responsibilities

  • Back the Head Chef in keeping the daily kitchen running smoothly, stepping in to lead service when called upon
  • Run your own section confidently with little supervision, and finish all prep and mise en place ahead of each service
  • Cook to set recipes and quality benchmarks so flavour, presentation and portions stay consistent, with every dish produced efficiently and plated to a high standard
  • Put forward ideas for new dishes, specials and better ways of working in the kitchen
  • Track ingredient use to cut waste, and help with stock control and placing kitchen orders
  • Meet food safety and hygiene requirements and keep every area clean, orderly and ready for service
  • Stay calm and productive when the venue is at its busiest, keeping communication with the Head Chef and brigade clear
  • Help newer cooks find their feet and own the quality of the kitchen from the first order to the last

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Prior work as a Chef de Partie, Sous Chef or in a similar commercial kitchen position, gained in a café, restaurant, bistro, deli or comparable setting
  • Solid cooking, prep and kitchen organisation skills, with the confidence to run a section on your own
  • Proven ability to follow recipes and deliver consistent results, with close attention to food quality, presentation and detail
  • Able to stay organised and composed through busy services
  • Dependable, reliable work habits and strong communication and teamwork
  • A positive outlook, readiness to take responsibility, leadership potential and the confidence to make decisions when required
  • Relevant culinary qualifications are advantageous
  • Committed to full-time employment and willing to complete the required 6-month trial period
