Drainage Operators & Drainlayer

Civil infrastructure work in Otago is calling for seasoned drainage specialists. Openings span Drainlayers, Drainage Operators, Drainage Labourers, 20T Excavator Operators and Multi-Skilled Operators holding Class 4, all within the region's civil construction sector.
Projects are substantial and varied, taking in wastewater, stormwater, utilities, earthworks, roading and general civil works. It suits hands-on people who would rather solve practical problems than repeat one task all day. Applicants are judged on genuine work history, relevant experience and real on-site capability, so the role fits what you can deliver from your first day. Key Responsibilities
- Lay, build and maintain stormwater and sewer networks, covering both gravity and pressure drainage systems
- Put in pipelines together with the civil infrastructure that goes with them
- Contribute to installations at wastewater pump stations, treatment facilities and water treatment infrastructure
- Run 20T excavators safely on civil sites, along with loaders, compactors and other plant as needed
- Handle trenching, excavation, backfilling and preparation of each site
- Undertake PE welding where the job calls for it, as well as approved confined-space tasks
- Fit telecommunications and power utility infrastructure
- Pour and finish concrete, then help with landscaping and reinstating the site
- Read project requirements, deliver to specification and keep output steady without slipping below required quality standards
- Spot on-site challenges early and help shape workable fixes
- Coordinate closely with drainlayers, operators, supervisors and everyone else on site
- Observe health, safety and environmental procedures while limiting avoidable impacts on the environment and community
- Keep plant, work areas and sites in good order to an appropriate standard
Requirements & Eligibility
- Demonstrated background in drainage, civil construction or a closely related field, including relevant hands-on work as a Drainlayer, Drainage Operator, Excavator Operator or Drainage Labourer
- Proven record of operating construction machinery, where applicable
- A current, clean Class 2 driver's licence
- Class 4 licence advantageous, and a WTR endorsement also advantageous
- Hands-on time with excavators, loaders, compactors or other heavy machinery is advantageous
- Solid practical and technical grasp of construction work, backed by a commitment to quality workmanship
- A dependable, professional work ethic and the ability to adapt across different projects and responsibilities
- Strong communication and teamwork, plus practical problem-solving ability
- A safety-focused approach to every site activity
- Able to work consistently in a physically demanding construction setting
- Willing to relocate to Otago, New Zealand
- You must hold valid New Zealand work rights or meet the requirements for employer-supported visa sponsorship; visa sponsorship is available for suitable overseas candidates
