Marine Technician

An established marine servicing business in Thames-Coromandel, New Zealand, needs a Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic who is confident taking charge of marine engines from first diagnosis through to the finished repair.

Applicants should be able to prove their trade background and practical ability. Diagnostics, mechanical repair, electrical work on boats, commissioning and routine maintenance are where your experience will matter most. Jobs range across the workshop, customer locations and the water itself, alongside an experienced crew, with current marine technology and continuing technical training on offer. Key Responsibilities

  • Trace faults in the mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems of marine engines, using computerised diagnostic tools and manufacturer-specific software
  • Service petrol outboards and other marine power systems, covering scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, tune-ups, testing and performance assessments
  • Strip, inspect and rebuild engines and related parts, pinpoint mechanical defects, decide on the right fix, and carry out repairs, component replacement and overhauls
  • Diagnose and repair starting, charging and electrical systems on vessels, and work on MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems as required
  • Rig and set up outboard engines, controls, gauges and wiring, and fit marine electronics, accessories and associated equipment
  • Carry out pre-delivery inspections and commissioning, then run sea trials to confirm engines and systems perform as they should
  • Travel to customer sites for mobile servicing and repairs when required
  • Keep job sheets, service records and technical documentation accurate, working to manufacturer specifications and recommended repair procedures
  • Run a safe, tidy, professional workshop and produce consistently high-quality work on every job

Requirements & Eligibility

  • An NZQF Level 4 qualification in a relevant marine, mechanical or related trade, or an equivalent overseas qualification
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant internal-combustion engine experience, with hands-on outboard or marine engine work you can demonstrate
  • A track record of finding engine faults and fixing them effectively, and sound practical command of engine servicing and swapping mechanical components
  • A background in marine electrical and charging systems, and comfort operating computerised diagnostic equipment
  • Able to follow manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded, and MerCruiser experience is equally highly regarded
  • Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous, and marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
  • Strong at troubleshooting and solving problems, able to work alone and take ownership of each assigned job, and a positive presence in an experienced technical team
  • Firmly committed to safe work and quality workmanship
  • Full driver's licence is preferred
