Underground Heavy Diesel Fitter

Trade · Sydney NSW, Australia · Full-Time · $59/hr

Heavy machinery experience can be your route into a mining career in regional NSW. The employer wants qualified fitters and mechanics with genuine, practical experience on heavy equipment, whether that came from quarrying, earthmoving, mining, agricultural machinery, heavy vehicles or civil construction.

What matters most is what you can prove you have done, from fault diagnosis and repairs to keeping complex mechanical systems running safely and efficiently, rather than only where you worked. These are residential roles, so you live and work in a regional NSW community with no FIFO arrangement, and site rosters vary with options built around regular time at home. For fitters in the UAE or across the Gulf, it is a considered next step.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep heavy mobile machinery serviced and maintained for tough operating conditions, including underground loaders, drills, haul trucks and other specialised plant
  • Find faults in braking systems, drivelines, hydraulics, engines and transmissions, working from hydraulic schematics, drawings and technical manuals
  • Inspect equipment to catch mechanical problems before they become major failures, and complete pre-start checks
  • Handle mechanical repairs, component replacements and major change-outs, overhauls and rebuilds
  • Respond to breakdowns and get equipment safely back into operation
  • Deliver scheduled preventive maintenance to site requirements, following site isolation and permit procedures
  • Record defects, repairs, servicing and maintenance work, and report equipment problems and maintenance needs to supervisors
  • Work safely within a maintenance crew in a high-risk environment

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A recognised trade qualification such as Certificate III or equivalent in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Plant Mechanics or Agricultural Mechanics
  • Proven hands-on experience maintaining and repairing heavy machinery, plus the ability to show a genuine employment history and relevant mechanical duties
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, backed by working knowledge of engines, braking systems, transmissions, hydraulics and drivelines
  • Underground mining experience is beneficial but not mandatory; experience on Caterpillar, Sandvik or Epiroc equipment is highly regarded
  • Heavy-equipment experience from earthmoving, quarrying, agriculture, civil or heavy transport work will be considered
  • A current driver's licence
  • Readiness to work rostered shifts and settle into a residential mining environment
  • Clear communication and effective teamwork within a crew, along with the ability to work on your own while sticking to established safety procedures
  • Openness to learning underground mining practices and new machinery; additional working at heights, mining, confined space or first aid qualifications are advantageous
  • Willing to complete pre-employment medical and functional assessments and able to meet drug and alcohol testing and National Police Check requirements
  • Supporting evidence of your qualifications and relevant work experience; visa sponsorship is available for eligible candidates
