Australian embassy or Dubai consulate for a visa? Why your application goes online instead

Tips · 2026-10-13 · 10 min read

A South Asian man works on a laptop in a Dubai apartment at dusk, with a closed passport and folder on his desk.

Looking for the Australian embassy in Dubai to handle a visa is a natural first move, and it leads to a closed door. The Embassy, which is in Abu Dhabi, states that the Department of Home Affairs at the Dubai Consulate-General no longer processes Australian visa applications, and that neither the Embassy nor the Consulate-General will respond to enquiries about visa matters. Applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount, and the Embassy points applicants to VFS Global for biometric collection. For New Zealand, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi refers immigration matters to Immigration New Zealand. The useful question, then, is who handles each part of your file.

What the Australian missions in the UAE no longer do

Australia keeps two posts in the country: the Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate-General in Dubai, which covers Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Both are genuine government offices, and to many professionals in the Gulf they look like the obvious front door for a work visa.

They are not, and the Australian Embassy in the UAE says so plainly on its own website. Visa processing has ended at the Dubai Consulate-General, and a question about a visa matter will not be answered by either office. Silence from a mission is therefore the published position, not a sign that something is wrong with your case.

What the Embassy does publish is general guidance on documents. It explains, for example, that an Apostille can only be issued when the country receiving the public document is a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention. For any other service, read the mission's website before you cross town for it.

Where the four missions are

Keep these details to hand. They let you recognise the genuine offices when someone quotes a different address or number for an "embassy visa desk", whether you work in Dubai, Doha or Riyadh.

How to lodge an Australian work visa application from the UAE

The sequence below assumes an employer-sponsored route, whether the offer in front of you is one of the current IT and technology roles or a position in another field. The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill locally, and our in-depth guide to the subclass 482 visa explains its streams.

  1. Settle the employer's side first. The sponsoring employer must pay all the costs of becoming a sponsor and of nominating you, and cannot transfer them to you or your family.
  2. Lodge online through ImmiAccount. It is the only official website for applying for an Australian visa, so there is no paper file to hand over in Bur Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  3. Budget for the visa charge. The base application charge for the subclass 482 visa is AUD4,015.00 in each stream. It comes to roughly AED 10,250 at the rate the Central Bank of the UAE published on 7 October 2026 (2.553184 dirhams to one Australian dollar). Treat the dirham figure as a rough comparison only, because rates change. Other costs include English language tests, health checks, police certificates and biometrics, which the Embassy directs to VFS Global.
  4. Complete the health examination. Outside Australia it must be done by an approved panel physician or clinic, and you need a HAP ID to book. Results are generally valid for 12 months for this visa.
  5. Gather police certificates. Home Affairs may ask for one from every country you have lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. For the UAE, our guide to choosing between the two UAE police clearance certificates covers the issuers and their validity periods.
  6. Confirm the grant in VEVO. A visa grant that cannot be found in VEVO is probably fake.

Where to take a visa question instead

Begin with the department's own material. The Home Affairs Services outside Australia page has a country dropdown. Choose the United Arab Emirates, or another Gulf country, and it explains how to get a police certificate and find panel physicians.

For advice on your own circumstances, anyone providing immigration assistance must be a registered migration agent, a legal practitioner or an exempt person. Registered agents hold a Migration Agents Registration Number (MARN) and appear on the Register of Migration Agents; OMARA's page on helpers who are not registered shows what to check. An exempt person, such as your sponsor or a close family member, may help with an application but must not charge a fee.

Be just as exact about the messages you receive. An email that claims to come from Home Affairs but whose address does not end in .gov.au is a scam. Australia does not issue "work permits" or visa labels, so anyone selling one has nothing real to sell. And anyone promising a visa, permanent residency or citizenship is misleading you.

New Zealand: the same principle, different offices

The New Zealand Embassy to the United Arab Emirates refers immigration matters to Immigration New Zealand (INZ). The Consulate General in Dubai, at Emirates Towers, offers notarial services by appointment.

The main work route is the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), for people with a job offer from an accredited employer. You do not start it alone: the employer must send you a link to the online application form. The visa costs from NZD $1540, roughly AED 3,160 at the Central Bank of the UAE rate of 7 October 2026 (2.054431 dirhams to one New Zealand dollar), again a rough comparison. INZ shows processing as 80% within 5.5 weeks, an indication of pace and not a commitment. Our guide to New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa covers the requirements.

INZ never asks for visa fees to be paid into a bank account; it accepts debit or credit card payment on its forms, or payment at an approved Visa Application Centre. Official INZ email addresses end with immigration.govt.nz or mbie.govt.nz. A New Zealand visa can be checked as real with INZ's Visa Verification service.

Anyone giving New Zealand immigration advice must by law be licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority unless exempt, and its public register shows who currently holds a licence. You are not required to use an adviser at all.

UAE documents: attestation, not an embassy stamp

The United Arab Emirates is not listed as a contracting party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so UAE documents are legalised by attestation and not by apostille. That service belongs to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which certifies the signatures and seals on documents. A Ministry of Interior criminal clearance certificate, for example, must be attested by MOFA when it is for use abroad.

Let the grant set your timing

With no counter to visit, the only reliable signal is the grant itself, confirmed in VEVO. Keep your UAE employment and residence steady until then. When the moment comes, our explainer on the UAE visa cancellation grace period shows how to place your notice, your final pay and your flight inside the time you are given.

Common mistakes Gulf-based applicants make

  • Travelling to the mission to submit or chase a visa. Visa applications are no longer processed at the Dubai Consulate-General, and neither Australian office answers visa enquiries.
  • Paying for an "inside contact". Decisions are made by the Department of Home Affairs or by Immigration New Zealand, and nobody can sell you an outcome.
  • Trusting an unofficial address. Home Affairs emails end in .gov.au; INZ emails end with immigration.govt.nz or mbie.govt.nz.
  • Sending New Zealand visa fees to a bank account. INZ never asks for that.
  • Resigning on the strength of an email. Check the grant in VEVO, or through INZ's Visa Verification service, before you hand in notice.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Australian Consulate-General in Dubai accept visa applications?

No. The Australian Embassy in the UAE states that the Department of Home Affairs at the Dubai Consulate-General no longer processes Australian visa applications. Applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount, the only official website for applying for an Australian visa.

Is the Australian Embassy in Dubai or in Abu Dhabi?

Where do I give biometrics for an Australian visa in the UAE?
