UAE visa cancellation grace period: 30, 90 or 180 days, and how to time a considered exit
Tips · 2026-10-12 · 10 min read

After a UAE residence permit is cancelled or expires, you do not have to leave the same day. ICP grants a grace period first: 30 days as the standard, 90 days for skilled workers in levels 1-3 and property owners, and 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, among other listed groups. Stay beyond your window and the fine is AED 50 per day. If you are leaving Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah for an employer-sponsored role in Australia or New Zealand, the real task is to place that window so that your final pay, your documents and your flight all sit comfortably inside it.
Which grace period applies to you
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, known as ICP, is the body that cancels residence permits, and its cancellation service sets out three windows. Each one follows the expiry or cancellation of the permit itself, not your last day in the office.
| Residence category | Grace period | Before you rely on it |
|---|---|---|
| All categories not given a longer period | 30 days | Treat this as your working figure until a longer one is confirmed |
| Skilled workers in levels 1-3, and property owners | 90 days | Confirm with ICP that you fall in this group; a senior job title alone is not proof |
| Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, among other listed groups | 180 days | Check that the residence type on your permit is one of the listed groups |
The gap between the shortest and the longest window is about five months, so a few minutes on the ICP cancellation of residency permits service page is time well spent before you build a plan on the larger figures. If you cannot confirm a longer period, plan around 30 days.
What the AED 50 daily fine adds up to
Once the grace period has ended, remaining in the UAE costs AED 50 for every day. It looks modest for a day or two and then grows steadily: a week over comes to AED 350, and 30 days over comes to AED 1,500. For readers already thinking in their destination currency, AED 50 is roughly AUD 20 a day at the rate the Central Bank of the UAE published on 7 October 2026 (2.553184 dirhams to the Australian dollar). That is a rough comparison only, and rates change daily.
A composed exit keeps several days in reserve at the end of the window, so that a late document or a rescheduled flight does not turn into a daily charge.
How cancellation works, and who does what
An employment visa is not something you cancel alone. The process runs through your employer and two authorities, in a fixed order.
- Notice is served. Under Article 43 of the UAE Labour Law, either side may end the contract with written notice of not less than 30 days and not more than 90 days. The grace period has not begun at this stage.
- The labour contract and labour card are cancelled. Your employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), and you must sign the cancellation as well.
- You confirm your final pay. The company has to give MOHRE a letter from you confirming receipt of all wages and end-of-service benefits. Employers must pay outstanding wages, other entitlements and gratuity within 14 days of the contract ending, so sign only when the money has reached your account.
- The residence permit is cancelled. Your employer then applies to ICP. The service lists an application fee of AED 50 and a smart services fee of AED 100, AED 150 in total, with a processing time of 2 days through the ICP Smart Services website and app.
- The grace period runs. From this point your 30, 90 or 180 days are being counted, and the daily fine waits at the end of them.
The UAE government sets out the same sequence in its general provisions for the residence visa. If the settlement figure is unclear, our explainer on how end-of-service gratuity is worked out on basic salary will help you check it before you sign.
Timing cancellation around an Australian or New Zealand visa
The order that protects you is simple: visa granted first, resignation and cancellation second. Decisions rest with the Department of Home Affairs or Immigration New Zealand, and nobody can promise an outcome or a date, so your UAE residence is best left in place while an application is still being assessed.
Australia. Applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount, and a genuine grant can be found in VEVO; a grant that cannot be found there is probably fake. Look yours up before you hand in notice. For the Skills in Demand visa, a holder who is outside Australia when the visa is granted must begin employment within 90 days of entering Australia, as the Home Affairs page for the Core Skills stream explains. That period is counted from your arrival, so the date to plan around is the start date agreed with your sponsor. Our guide to the subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa covers the visa in depth.
New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand shows processing for the Accredited Employer Work Visa as 80% within 5.5 weeks. That is an indication of pace, not a commitment on your file, so wait for the decision itself before you resign. Our guide to the Accredited Employer Work Visa and Immigration New Zealand's AEWV page set out the requirements.
Whichever country you are heading for, the anchor is the start date in your offer, whether that is a mining engineer role in Brisbane or a position elsewhere. Count back from it: the notice period first, then the 14-day settlement window and the 2-day ICP processing time, and finally your grace period as the buffer for handovers, packing and the flight.
Some people travel ahead and leave the UAE visa open as a fallback. A resident expatriate who lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously has the residence visa nullified automatically, with some listed exemptions, so an open visa is not a lasting safety net.
What to collect while you are still a resident
Several tasks are easier with a current Emirates ID and UAE PASS than from another continent.
- Police clearance. The Ministry of Interior's Criminal Clearance Certificate is requested with a UAE PASS login, residents need an ID card issued in the UAE, and the certificate is valid for 30 days from issue. The Dubai Police certificate takes 5 working days and is valid for 3 months, while police certificates for Australian visas are valid for 12 months from the issue date. Our guide to choosing a UAE police clearance for an Australian visa compares the two.
- Copies for later. Dubai Police accepts applications from people outside the UAE who have previously entered the country, and asks them for a personal photo, a passport copy and a copy of the previous residence visa. Keep clear copies of your residence visa and a note of your Emirates ID number, which can be valid or expired when you apply.
- Health examinations. Examinations for an Australian visa must be done by an approved panel physician or clinic, and you need a HAP ID to book. Home Affairs lists four in the UAE, and for the subclass 482 visa the results are generally valid for 12 months, so this can be completed before you leave.
Common mistakes with the grace period
- Assuming 90 or 180 days on the strength of seniority or salary, without confirming the category with ICP.
- Counting from the last working day or the resignation date. The window follows the cancellation or expiry of the permit.
- Signing the letter on wages and end-of-service benefits before the payment has arrived, when the employer has 14 days from the end of the contract to pay.
- Resigning on the strength of a job offer alone, before the visa decision has been made and, for Australia, before the grant is visible in VEVO.
- Booking the departure for the final day of the window, leaving no room for a delayed document or a rescheduled flight at AED 50 a day.
- Writing to the Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate-General in Dubai about an application. Both state that they will not respond to enquiries about visa matters; ImmiAccount is the channel.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the grace period after UAE visa cancellation?
ICP grants 30 days as the standard grace period after a residence permit expires or is cancelled. Skilled workers in levels 1-3 and property owners are given 90 days, and Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, among other listed groups, are given 180 days. If you cannot confirm a longer period, plan around 30 days.
What is the fine for overstaying once the grace period ends?
Staying in the UAE after the grace period costs a fine of AED 50 per day. A week over comes to AED 350 and 30 days over comes to AED 1,500.
Can I cancel my UAE employment visa myself?
The process runs through your employer. The company first applies to MOHRE to cancel the labour contract and labour card, which you must also sign, and then applies to ICP to cancel the residence visa. Sign the letter confirming receipt of your wages and end-of-service benefits only once they have been paid.
How much does ICP charge to cancel a residence permit, and how long does it take?
The ICP cancellation of residency permits service lists an application fee of AED 50 and a smart services fee of AED 100, which is AED 150 together. The listed processing time is 2 days, through the ICP Smart Services website and app.
Should I cancel my UAE visa before my Australian or New Zealand visa is granted?
It is safer to wait. Visa decisions rest with the Department of Home Affairs or Immigration New Zealand and nobody can promise an outcome, so keep your UAE residence in place until the decision is in your hands. For Australia, check that the grant appears in VEVO before you resign.
Can I get a UAE police clearance after my visa is cancelled and I have left?
Dubai Police accepts applications from people outside the UAE who have previously entered the country. You need a personal photo, a passport copy and a copy of your previous residence visa, and the Emirates ID number used to apply can be valid or expired.
