UAE police clearance validity: 30 days or 3 months, so time yours to the visa request

UAE police clearance validity is shorter than most people expect: the Ministry of Interior certificate is valid for 30 days from issue and the Dubai Police certificate for 3 months, while Home Affairs treats police certificates for Australian visas as valid for 12 months. The practical rule is simple. Order the certificate only when your visa file is ready for it or a case officer asks, and plan every other step, including MOFA attestation, so the certificate is still fresh on the day it is uploaded.

This guide is for professionals and trade workers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Riyadh with a sponsored offer in Australia, or one in sight. If you are still choosing between the two UAE issuers, start with our comparison of which UAE police clearance suits an Australian visa.

Two kinds of validity, and why both matter

Two periods are easy to mix up: the issuer's own validity, and how long the visa authority will rely on the certificate.

For the UAE, the issuers publish short periods. The Ministry of Interior criminal clearance service says its certificate is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance. The Dubai Police clearance certificate service says its certificate is valid for 3 months and takes 5 working days.

On the Australian side, the Home Affairs character requirements page says police certificates are valid for 12 months from the issue date. It also says a certificate must cover the time from age 16 up to the issue date, or the whole time you spent in that country.

Plan around the shortest period that applies. A Ministry of Interior certificate that is two months old is inside Home Affairs' 12 months but well past the issuer's 30 days, and that is not a difference worth testing in your case.

What should set your timing in motion

The trigger for ordering is your visa file, not the moment Australia first appears on your plans. Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you have lived in, usually if you are over 17 and spent at least 12 months there in the past 10 years. Whether it is needed depends on your case. Three triggers are common:

  • Your application is ready to lodge. Your sponsor's nomination is moving, your other documents are gathered, and the certificate is the last piece.
  • A case officer asks. The request in your ImmiAccount sets the clock, and the certificate should be issued after that point.
  • You confirm it is not needed at all. If you are sponsored by an accredited sponsor on a subclass 482 visa, you do not need police certificates from countries other than Australia when you attach the sponsor's reference confirming good character and no criminal convictions. Ask your employer about this before paying for anything. Our guide to the 482 Skills in Demand visa explains how sponsorship works.

Counting backwards from the upload date

Once you know roughly when the certificate must be uploaded, work backwards using the periods and fees each authority publishes.

StepTime the authority listsValidity once issuedPublished fee
Ministry of Interior certificate, for use outside the UAEApplied for through its smart app or website with UAE PASS30 days from issueAED 100
MOFA attestation of that certificateDigital within 2 hours in working hours; courier 1-3 business days in the UAE; up to 15 business days outside the UAERuns inside the certificate's 30 daysAED 300, as listed on the Ministry of Interior page

For the Ministry of Interior route, the certificate plus MOFA attestation comes to AED 400 in government fees. As a rough comparison only, that is about AUD 157 at the Central Bank of the UAE rate published on 7 October 2026; rates change daily.

The MOFA step sits inside your 30 days

The Ministry of Interior says a certificate for use abroad must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. That attestation happens after the certificate is issued, so it uses up part of the 30-day period rather than adding to it.

The MOFA attestation service lists three speeds. Digital attestation is completed within 2 hours during official working hours. Courier attestation inside the UAE takes 1-3 business days. For documents outside the UAE, it can take up to 15 business days, roughly three weeks of a certificate that lasts 30 days.

For courier attestation the original must be in Arabic or English and must not be laminated. Once attested, it can be verified at verify.mofa.gov.ae.

The Dubai Police certificate's 3-month validity leaves more room, which is often the calmer choice if a request is still a few weeks away.

A dated plan you can follow

Use this order once a sponsored offer is in hand.

  1. Confirm the requirement. Ask your employer whether they are an accredited sponsor, and check the request list in your ImmiAccount once your application is lodged or about to be.
  2. List every country you need a certificate from. Include your home country and any Gulf country where you spent 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Our guide to police clearance from every Gulf country you lived in names each issuer.
  3. Choose your UAE issuer. Ministry of Interior if you can complete MOFA attestation quickly; Dubai Police if you want the 3-month window or you have already left the UAE.
  4. Prepare the inputs in advance. Your UAE PASS login for the Ministry of Interior, or your Emirates ID number for Dubai Police. Applicants abroad also need a photo, passport copy and previous residence visa copy.
  5. Order when the trigger arrives. Apply when the file is ready to lodge or the case officer's request appears, not weeks earlier.
  6. Attest straight away, if needed. Book MOFA attestation the day the Ministry of Interior certificate is issued.
  7. Translate anything not in English. Home Affairs needs the original and an English translation; translators outside Australia must include their full name, address, phone number and language qualifications and experience.
  8. Upload promptly. Note each certificate's issue date so you can see where every period ends.

When your residence is ending at the same time

Timing becomes tighter when your UAE residence and your move overlap. Residents applying to the Ministry of Interior need an ID card issued in the UAE, and the certificate covers their period of residence.

After a residence permit is cancelled, ICP grants a 30-day grace period for most categories. If a request may come after you leave, plan which certificate you can obtain from abroad. Dubai Police lets people outside the UAE apply if they have previously entered the country, and the Emirates ID number used can be valid or expired. Our guide to getting a UAE police clearance from outside the UAE covers the fingerprint card that often sets the pace.

Lining the certificate up with the rest of your file

A police certificate is rarely the only document with a clock. For the subclass 482 visa, health examination results are generally valid for 12 months, and Home Affairs advises organising them before lodging to reduce processing times. An English test, where your visa or employer needs one, also takes time to book and sit.

Finish the slower, longer-lasting items first and leave the short-lived certificate until last. If an English test is on your list, timed practice on PractiseNow for IELTS and PTE can help you sit it early rather than in the same week.

For New Zealand, Immigration New Zealand says AEWV applicants must be of good character and asks them to check whether police certificates are needed; confirm on the INZ website before ordering.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering the certificate as soon as you start applying. A Ministry of Interior certificate can pass its 30 days long before anyone requests it, and you pay the fee again.
  • Treating 12 months as the only period that counts. The issuer's shorter validity still appears on the certificate, so plan around it.
  • Forgetting that MOFA attestation runs inside the 30 days. Up to 15 business days outside the UAE can leave little margin.
  • Choosing the version for use within the UAE. The AED 50 Ministry of Interior option is the wrong document for an overseas visa file; choose the one for use outside the UAE.
  • Leaving the UAE without a plan for the certificate. Once your UAE ID is no longer valid, the Ministry of Interior route generally closes and the Dubai Police route from abroad takes extra preparation.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a UAE police clearance valid?

It depends on the issuer. The Ministry of Interior criminal clearance certificate is valid for 30 days from issue, and the Dubai Police clearance certificate for 3 months. Home Affairs separately treats police certificates for Australian visas as valid for 12 months from the issue date.

Should I get my police clearance before I have a job offer?

Usually not. A certificate ordered months ahead can pass its printed validity before anyone reads it, and you pay the fee again for a fresh one. Wait until your application is ready to lodge or your case officer asks for it.

How long does MOFA attestation take for a Ministry of Interior certificate?

MOFA lists digital attestation within 2 hours during official working hours and courier attestation inside the UAE in 1-3 business days. Documents handled outside the UAE can take up to 15 business days, which can use up much of the 30-day window, so plan that step before you order.

What if my police clearance expires while my visa is still being processed?

Home Affairs counts police certificates as valid for 12 months from the issue date, so a certificate already in your file is not automatically lost when the issuer's own period ends. If your case officer asks for a new certificate, order a fresh one promptly and upload it as requested.

Can I still get a UAE police clearance after my residence visa is cancelled?

Yes, Dubai Police lets people outside the UAE apply if they have entered the country before, using an Emirates ID number that can be valid or expired. The Ministry of Interior service needs an ID card issued in the UAE, so former residents generally use the Dubai Police route.

Key takeaways

  • The Ministry of Interior certificate is valid for 30 days and the Dubai Police certificate for 3 months; Home Affairs relies on police certificates for 12 months.
  • Order only when your file is ready to lodge or a case officer asks, and check first whether an accredited 482 sponsor's reference removes the need.
  • MOFA attestation of a Ministry of Interior certificate uses part of its 30 days, so book it the day the certificate is issued.
  • Finish longer-lasting items such as your CV, English test and health examination first, and leave the police certificate until last.
